Charlie Wilsons War

Why is Charlie Wilson's war such a good movie? Why should I go watch a movie which showcases a political situation created by the cold war that has in no way affected anybody whom I have never known? Those were the questions that at some unknown level to myself and some other random facts that kept me from seeing this sort of biopic.

I have always wondered why the Americans had to arm the mujahedeen in Afghanistan when their government was more than a thousand miles away... let alone share a border. Having never really bothered to even look at facts or having real interest in political history, I just assumed what every middle class Indian whom I have ever come across and conversed at an intellectual level has told me- it’s just their mother in law attitude. Somehow biased I never really questioned the soviet presence just because they shared borders or could even imagine any war crimes being committed in the region.

Coming back to why is Charlie Wilsons war such a good movie? It’s not only a good movie but a brilliant movie. Though told through an American perspective- it is a non biased perspective (unlike a movie called air force one- if you look at it as a neutral. Yes at some points of the film when they show the Russian atrocities that were being committed in the region-- it was just in saying that communism is evil. But then that much artistic leeway must be given to the filmmaker purely because he does not show the Americans as god sent heroes fighting that evil.

Tom Hanks certainly provides us with a powerhouse performance as usual. As Charlie Wilson you would think that Tom Hanks was brought up in Texas. I know it is difficult for folks back home to understand that but it is the same as watching a performance of say Aamir Khan as some iyer boy brought up in rural tamil nadu and pulling that off with the audience coming out of the theatre saying he must have been brought up there for sure. But overshadowing even Hanks performance was another brilliant actor who was stellar- Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I have seen three of his movies in the last three weeks- Before the devil knows you are dead, the savages and then this- all three performances magnificent. Mike Nichols direction and camera angles is as is his legendary sense. From an artistic stand point a scene that I loved was when Charlie talks to an important contributor from Texas regarding an issue. And the director shoots the scene from below the table. As hanks talks he lifts his legs onto the table and we see him wearing boots as does the contributor. And one character actor that I cannot miss mentioning is Om Puri as General Zia ul Haq- simply brilliant in what little role he has to play.

The movie based on real facts is taken as a movie and is not a documentary or one man’s struggle or anything like that. What keeps the audience on the edge of their seats is the quirky screenplay. You need to listen hard to get some of the sarcasm. For example- in one scene when Charlie is meeting Zia for the first time- Zia asks him what he would like. He says with his American\Texan swagger a glass of whisky and ice. Everybody around him is offended and Zia looks at him and says no alcoholic beverages are served in the presidential palace with a smile. Charlie says- of course, I am sorry I am sure a lot of people make that mistake. Om puri smiles at him and simply says- NO. It had me smiling alright. Cause in that it showed an American swagger or mentality when dealing with a different culture- not in an arrogant way but in a beseeching way. Om puri looks at him as the conversation continues and says – Mr.Wilson you are known to be a man with many character flaws ---- as the scene finishes and Charlie walks out he tells his assistant on being asked how the meeting went .. He says, “I was told I was a man with many character flaws from a man who killed his predecessor in a military coup...”

The ending was just as powerful to me. A realistic view/ an eye-opener in some ways. All in all a really good movie. Rating—4.5/5

Battle Royale

That the BCCI is rattled by ICL's moves is evident from its knee-jerk reactions. Not content with stunting the growth of the game for decades , it now wants to snuff out any competition fromits territory.Apart from mismanaging the sport and nipping many promising careers in the bud, the BCCI has dedicated itself only to mint money. If there is one institution that does not deserve the money it makes, it has to be the BCCI.Worse, it saves most of that money by leaving important decisions to the courts.

Subash Chandra promoted Zee is not an angel. It wants its share of the cake and it would be naive to believe that Zee has cricket development as its primary agenda. However, the very effort to challenge BCCI's monopoly is welcome and praiseworthy. How can a bunch of partisan selectors decide that only 11 are fit to play international cricket? If the BCCI thinks certain players are 'unfit' to play for the country, why should it ban them from playing for a rival league?

The BCCI's shameless double standards have hit a new low. It warns players joining ICL with a ban, but has no qualms in welcoming Brian Lara to its fold. When it can accept Lara, why can't it accept others?

The game thrives in competition not only on the field but also off it. No institution must be allowed to use its financial muscle to arm twist others into submission. The ICL has as much rights , if not more, as the BCCI to "develop" the game. By being a poor loser and whining aloud, the BCCI is only making a mockery of itself. Instead, it must try and stem the exodus by instilling a semblance of professionalism in running the sport in this cricket crazy country.

The Wild Wild West

The Searchers

A movie I saw recently -The man who shot Liberty Valence piqued or rather rekindled my interest in westerns. I then saw another timeless classic – High Noon mesmerised by a constrained performance of Gary Cooper and a concept of the movie happening in real time. Extremely fast paced and not the typical good versus evil movie High noon kept my interest in a movie marathon going. And perhaps as fate would have it the best movie was reserved for the last- The Searchers.
The Searchers like many of the movies I like to review was not considered by the critics at the time of release (1956) to be a John ford classic. Indeed it was overlooked by the academy at the time. But as time has progressed it has found its way into the twenty greatest movies ever made almost every decade since. The searchers is again not the typical western where in the characters are either good or evil. There is a deep conviction in character portrayal and Ford shows us why he is considered to be one of the greatest directors of the century.
The plot outline is as follows- Ethan Edwards, returned from the Civil War to the Texas ranch of his brother, hopes to find a home with his family and to be near the woman he obviously but secretly loves. But a Comanche raid destroys these plans, and Ethan sets out, along with his 1/8 Indian nephew Martin, on a years-long journey to find the niece kidnapped by the Indians under Chief Scar. But as the quest goes on, Martin begins to realize that his uncle's hatred for the Indians is beginning to spill over onto his now-assimilated niece. Martin becomes uncertain whether Ethan plans to rescue Debbie...or kill her
The movie examines the deep racism at different levels that was/Is imbibed in the American society. John Wayne ( I must say here another one of style icons having watched him Hatari all those years ago and having grown up on his black and white westerns on Star tv every Sunday in third standard) as Ethan Edwards is outstanding and it is a pity that it was not recognized at the time of release. The conviction with which he played the role almost made me think as to what the character was going through. The movie achieves greatness not because it was a breakthrough movie to even adress the issues of racism but to have shown what the west was at the time and sheer blunt way of putting it forward. Unlike High noon- in where the movie takes place between 11am and 12.15 pm of a day the searchers takes place over 5 years. Its one of those movies that you feel you grow with ( the first movie that I felt this emotion with a movie was James Cameroon’s- the abyss).
Another reason that I would put this movie at such a high pedestal is that in showing the blatant racism Ford does not try to justify his characters heroes or for that matter “the Villains” which I feel is what progressive cinema should be about- Cinema that makes you think of an issue that you have never thought about before and to form an opinion on that issue without being guided to the opinion of the maker of the film. All of these issues aren't dealt in a conventional way of film making as being part of the mainstream story but is inherent which again just adds to the shear brilliance of the movie. A five star rating in all departments of film making!

There’s no news such as bad news!

I have been watching a lot of movies lately. It’s not something new some might say. But circumstances are such that my only refuge has been good movies that help me take my mind of things. For as always whenever I have let my mind wander on things that weigh heavily on my mind I find better ways of feeling sorrow and sympathy at a self that basically does not need that. The movie I chose to write up from all these movies I have been watching is- Ace in the hole

Kirk Douglas is one of my favorite style icons from the fifties. Having watched Spartacus all those years ago (probably when I was in second standard) I had become an instant fan. And hence when I found ace in the hole playing on turner classic movies.. having nothing else pressing to do .. I decided to park my hyde on me sofa and started to be enthralled by an age gone. The movie was written and directed by Billy Wilder known more so for a number of academy award winning movies. This though wasn’t one. The movie when it was released had such a poor response that the movie studio re-released the movie with a new name- The big Carnival in order to create more mass appeal. It was one of those movies that isn’t talked of as a classic that has even played a number of times on television. It was apparently gathering dust till TCM picked it to screen.

The story and screenplay seems way ahead of its time and probably a reason as to not appeal to the public. The story goes like this- there is reporter who comes and offers his services to a small town newspaper because he has been kicked out of large newspapers and media bigwigs for one reason or the other. The owner of the newspaper who is an idealist in a sense hires him to give him a chance under a few regulations that he believe in the ideals on which his newspaper was founded. Douglas agrees. He is soon sent to a neighboring town to report on a certain local event of standing. He has a rookie kid that is his acting photographer. They stop on the way at a gas station which happens to be in the summit of an old Indian ( native American) mountain tomb. On not getting service they look around and find the few people who are there buzzing at a cave-in in the tomb. The owner of the gas station they find out to be trapped in a cave-in. Douglas volunteers to find his way through the cave in to check on the trapped individual and give him a blanket and hope that he is going to be eventually rescued. He smells a story in it that would help resurrect his career. Though his manipulation of reporting by the next day the whole nation knows of the fate that he individual trapped in the cave-in under a headlines that reads- exclusive- the curse of the Indian tomb strikes!

What follows is a story of media manipulation and attention .that you could compare to the –“the big carnival”. The ending I thought was predictable and not as bold as the movie itself. But then to think that 55 years ago somebody could already see what the media was degrading into! The characterization and “how manipulative a reporter can get” is shown in brilliant light. A must watch – wouldn’t hesitate to give it a five star rating for ingenuity!

On Sandy’s special request

I saw this movie Stardust recently. I was feeling a bit blue and wanted something to perk me up. For once all of my other friends had seen this highly rated movie before I had. So I decided to spend another lonely Friday night at the theatre watching Stardust. The movie was excellently made with a great production value. The story though simple and probably based of so many fairytales put together ( I sure a lot of you will end up saying it is copied from hindi or tam cinema) but it was refreshing all the same. The movie had Claire Dane in the lead role with Michelle Pfieffer playing a witch, At 50 you couldn’t tell her apart from a blossoming 25 yr old. The surprise element in the movie for me was Robert Di Nero for I did not know he was in the movie. He was a touch brilliant ( as usual!!) playing an eccentric hip captain. The movie was so cleanly taken with no swear words or even a nipple shown and yet managed to keep me enthralled. All in all a mut watch at a theatre near you!

Seriously you must be Joking!

Been following this story for the fun of it over the last few days. I know by now all you guys must know what I am going to say but here goes. How much more can the media stoop to. Its like they are "breaking barriers" each day! For those few of you wondering it turns out that the "sting reporter" and the "traficked girl" were both hired by a person who had some grudge against the poor teacher. In the meantime the damage has been done and her reputation is not comin back and neither is the fact that she was beaten brutally in public. Really even if there was a case which there dosnt seem to be whatevr happened to Innocent until proven guilty? The police seem to have acted on media reports rather than do their job which is carry out an "in-ves-ti-ga-tion". Their policy in most of this seems to " abhey saale angraze mat jadho"... Really even if she was traficking women and she might be .. she might be no paragon of virtue.. I dont know .. but its a democracy for godsake.. why dont ppl go to Laloo prasad yadav or "K" s house and beat them up! Now I am just day dreaming.. but seriously do any of you guys see a way out of this hole we have dug ourselves into or are we just tunneling to china!

1947- A Love Story

It's official. The country's first Prime Minister was in love with the wife of the last viceroy general. That there was more to the Nehru- Edwina Mountbatten saga than meets the eye was common knowledge. But now there is a stamp of legitimacy to what was till now a rumour. Lady Pamela Mountbatten, the daughter of Lord Mountbatten, writes in her book about the affair her mother had with Nehru.

She says
"The love Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had for Lady Edwina Mountbatten was chivalric and it was not physical"

If it had not been for a damning revelation, this could have been yet another extra-marital affair between two consenting adults, though it involves a Prime Minister.

In an interview to CNNIBN,Lady Pamela says
"My father trusted her decisions implicitly... and of course, her special relationship with Pandit Nehru was very useful for him ever the pragmatist — because there were moments towards the end of our time in India when the Kashmir problem was extremely difficult.Pandit Nehru was a Kashmiri himself, so he was emotional about the problem. If things were particularly tricky my father would say to my mother, 'Do try to get Jawaharlal to see that this is terribly important..."

In other words, the 'weakness' of Nehru was exploited by Mountbaten to have his way in political issues, especially the Kashmir issue. The move to refer the Kashmir issue to the UN is seen by many as a tactical blunder.A full 60 years later, we know get an idea of what transpired behind the scenes.

It is shocking to note that a Prime Minister can be influenced thus. And even more shocking is the deafening silence of the media and the Congress camp.

You expect a PM to be a model citizen- not only in Public life, but alsoin his/her private life. It is a huge embarrasment that a PM compromised on strategic national issues at the behest of his 'lover'.

Nehru might be a statesman. But this reveleation makes me wonder if there were more skeletons in the cupboard.

Chennai Masala

Introducing CBCNN!!!

No, this is not a new news channel to rival CNNIBN, but a blog dedicated to 'Hindu' bashing. CBCNN expands to Chennai based Chinese National Newspaper and describes 'The Hindu' as a comunist rag and N Ram ,a Chinese mercenary. The blog dubs the paper 'Chindu' and appears to have a heavy right wing leaning, but nevertheless exposes the blatant left leanings and shocking double standards of the paper I once respected. What a fall from grace for the Mount Road Marx.

Potter Mania

If it was Sivaji frenzy last month, Harry potter is this month's media fodder. When I swiched on the TV this morning, all I got was Potter, Potter and more of potter as if nothing else on earth is happening. Agreed, its a book loved by many and the
last in the series is releasing. So what? You dont expect news stations to call up correspondents across the country to ask if the milkman has deliverd milk or newspaper boy has delivered the paper in your area. Do you? Then why do the same for a book release? What is preventing them from just giving the news that the final book is relasing today and is expected to fly off the shelves?Haven't better books ever got released? Did they all get this attention? All this makes me yearn for the good old DD days when news was just that - news.

I'm Back

I was surprised to see so much of activity on Sivaji and could not resist adding one more to the pile.Let me tell you my Sivji experience.

In the run up to the release there was an unprecedented publicity glitz and Sivaji was on everyone's lips so much that a friend of mine, whose visa got rejected saw a silver lining in the fact that he could watch thaialvar in action on day 1.
I thought all this hype and hoopla was crazy and did not want to get carried away and hence got to see the movie only last week. I can hear santhosh saying "Shame on you!!!".

I must say I enjoyed the movie , but was this their best effort?. As I walked out of the theater,I asked a friend , who is a die hard RK fan, Whether this was his best movie? Understanding the implied meaning, he said" You go and watch a spidey/superman to see someone play larger than life and enjoy. Thalaivar films are of that genre.". This is an oft repeated explanation and an acceptable one.Opinion on whether the movie was worth the hype and the budget is divided. But no one can
deny the fact that it did entertain every section of the audience.

Now, there were quite a few logical gaps in the movie, but the ones listed in the previous posts were a little unreasonable I thought.

The CPR scene- RK I thought only worked in America and I am not sure whether the film mentions about his graduation. And the CPR scene should be seen in the context of a later scene in which the same procedure is used to breathe life into RK. The first scene was to let the audience know that something called CPR exists. And , I must add that I did not know what CPR was.

And the second issue was with hiring the lawyers to execute his plans. What difference would it have made? The system would still have posed problems(there is a scene in which various officials ask for various forms) and without cutting corners
nothing would have moved. And the villan would have ensured that hurdles are created at every step. I dont think lawyers would have made any difference.

And the line.. rich get richer is again not a sweeping statement to pander to the masses. It should be seen in the light of the previous statement in which RK talks about tax evasion and the consequent loss to the government and the resulting
inflation that makes the poor poorer.

And most importantly, where in the film is the tit shot???? :)-I felt shreya was too groovy and way too young for RK.The villan did a fantanstic job and Vivek need not have been thrust into every frame of the movie.

All said and done, I felt the movie was as good(or as bad?) as any other RK film and asssuming that the producers have done their math right, must be a profitable one for AVM.

Wake up call for all Tamilians

With the announcement of the New Seven Wonders of the World, every Indian has a reason to smile. Our Taj Mahal has fought a tough 'competition' and has been elected as one of the New Seven Wonders. One thing I have been wondering about is what makes something a wonder. Is it the sheer architectural brilliance or the popularity among the voters? Take the Christ Redeemer as an example. It neither has the 'beauty of the Taj' (Which every Indian swears to or atleast that is what the media says. Moreover, I am sure that half the Indians who had voted for the Taj had never seen been to it.) nor is it as long as the Great Wall of China (its length overshadowed probably only by the number of nominations it would have received from the Word's most populated nation). If the Christ Redeemer could be a finalist, then I am sure we can nominate many more from India that can match it stone-by-stone, unless otherwise the event organizers had a rule that there has to be only one entry from each nation.

India, I am sure, can offer few more architectural wonders than the stereotyped image of the Mausoleum named the Taj Mahal (RSS might beg to differ though, especially with a section of the society claiming that the Taj Mahal was not built by Shah Jahan but rather acquired by him from a Hindu King Jai Singh, and that the Taj originally was a Vedic temple). For example, take the majestic Thiruvalluvar statue at Kanyakumari. I wonder in what way this statue is inferior compared to the Christ Redeemer. In fact, it matches up to it in many ways and even overshadows it in many aspects.

Christ Redeemer

7000 tonnes

Cost

$250,000 (in the year 1931)

$1,519,097 (INR 6.14 crores)

The Thiruvalluvar statue is 2 meters taller, weighs ten times more and considering the inflation over 70 years from the time the Christ Redeemer was constructed, it has costed us less. I am not sure what are the ideologies the Redeemer stands for (if that ever is a reason for being nominated as a World Wonder), but our Thiruvalluvar statue stands for a lot as one gathers from this article.

I visited Kanyakumari last September and I was awestruck by the Thriuvalluvar statue (No, I am not kiddding here). I admit that I was not poignantly moved by the statue per se. But the location was breath taking. The point where it stands is probably one of the roughest seas you will encounter in life. One can get to see beautiful sunsets with the statue in the foreground. And the winds are so strong that one has to be careful so as not to be blown away. After all this structure had withstood the monstrosity of the Tsunami in 2004.

I am sure not many are aware of the fact that our very own Madurai Meenakshi Temple was nominated in the preliminary rounds. Had every Tamilian voted atleast twice for Madurai Meenakshi Temple, we would have easily got more than 14 crore votes for it and we would be having it in the final list now.
So it stands to conclude that we Tamils have lost out due to our inaction. The Champion of the Tamil Classes Dr.Kalaignar has to take up the cause of Tamils and ensure that Tamils do not lose out on this parade of pride on the Global front. Such assertations of Tamilian superiority can only facilitate the declaration of Tamil not only as a national language but also as a Global Language.

Disclaimers:
1. The author has nothing personally against the Christ Redeemer or the Taj Mahal. He belongs to the group of people who have never been to any of the Wonders.
2. The author does not claim to be a Tamil partisan and disassociates himself from any hardcore groups.
3. The author refuses to have the honour of giving the 'Champions of Tamilians' title to our beloved Chief Minister. The media has already done that and deserves full praise for it.

sivaji-the third review......

well....just went through your transformers....hey all that u say 'bout trans....exactly what quite a few of the "seth"kids say about rajini and his movie...the coin toss...fights a lot....neway i havent seen the transformers so will reserve my judgement only to sivaji....well since a lot has been written about this movie ill keep this short( ill try)....
pluses-rajini movie.....awesome shriya(biggest plus if u ask me), comedy is good in parts(i would watch the movie again(on dvd in parts) for kalivitu vandhenna chumma kamal hassan madri irrupein).....and rajini looks really young..awesome makeup..though looks a lil overdone in a few scenes...
now the music.....i actually found it very avg...two songs r good (style and one after the mgr spoof..) rest r really avg i mean u just will not remember them 10 yrs down the line like u do a naa autokaaren or yen pair padayapa..u get the picture right....

bad stuff-too long could have been trimmed by 30 mins....the climax actually drags with the mottai boss comin and all....looks like shankar wanted a new get up so he goes on to drag the story...
not much of a new story but that is excused because u r an idiot if u expect one esp for a "mass" hero...but this also means he has reduced the repeat audience because if there are any it will be only the fans and not the "family crowds"that thronged CM....this actually is visible on crouds in AP, KAR and even semi rural and rural areas where crouds have started thinning....

i actually found the music shop fight lame...bad thread work.....these fights r getting too repetetive in almost all movies.

neway one thing i agree with prashant is nothin in the movie makes it worth the estimated 60cr budget...yeah the sets in the songs r grand but hey i expect more for that kinda money......and yeah i would like to add this....Shankar if you r listening uve got to drop the lame village turns city graphics man..or atleast get more realistic stuff....this bloody thing looks exactly the same as from mudhalvan.....use the money here...on computer graphics.....for all the hype..except for the white look the other CG r rather ordinary.....

Transformers-Waste-formers

Transformers - Wasteformers

As I lay deep in thought on my recliner ,wondering the frequency at which I have been goin to theatres and the more I would in the imminent future a sudden thought of no-nonsense movies yet stuck me. I have been pretty pleased with my movie selection over the past 2 months or so be it goin to theatres or renting dvd's. Well if I were to go by my picks forever I might just bite my tongue for lack of discretion, which by the way I have after tonight's most insensible and shittest movie I have seen. 'Transformers'. No words to describe the hatred I have developed towards Michael Bay. Seriously Steven Spielberg's banner ,though not his directorial venture, ought to have been thought better. If I were to watch this movie some 20 years back, back in the days of He-Man I would have had my money on He Man cartoons still. Such is the quality of this movie. Special effects apart the movie is just a waste of time. The dialogues are inexplicably bad. Scenes like the introduction of Magnytron (some crap) saying " I am Magnytron with its posture " are just beyond my digestion. And the conclusive elocution by Octotron (not sure) was bringing out the lack of maturity in the director. Though one might argue for its effects and 'the made to look good music' it might just steal the show among the kids for a while. A man with perfect senses would despise this 'over usage of money' completely. The intended comedy at regular intervals, Shia's performance, the hot Megan Fox were the only exceptions from an otherwise awful movie. I never in the past had felt so funnier after watching a movie ,when people started clapping in the theater. Though this particular version of ET movies was thought out differently (atleast thought so b4 watchin it) sparring the ugly aliens it might have just been better off with some thought to the dialogues. Seriously the storyline would not have been that bad afterall. The dialogues were so badly written that even a boy scout could have done a better job. It was a shocker and clearly lacked application. The next time I get onto one of the big construction machines for my testing all I would think of is changing to a robot. Bull shit. I wish I had my eclipse turned into a Ferrari. That was the only positive thought I drew from this otherwise bullshit of a movie. Please do not waste $8 or watever the money is.

Sivaji- The BOSS's BOSS

Sivaji-The Boss was by all means a movie made just for Rajni. With all the media hype and fan lore the movie ought to be seen . Reason being the movie is all about Rajni and his charisma. Truly that's what every rajni fan wants and not the true message shankar tries to press with his every other movie. Shankar on his part has done a pretty bad job considering the fact that he has convoluted around the same core since his first movie in Gentleman. Indian and Mudalvan to an extent were the exceptions. Shreya was a treat to watch. To me she is the next best thing tamil filmdom has seen since Asin's arrival. Vivek after a long run of loss of form is back with his catchy lines and spot comedies. Though he seems to be running out of ideas atleast. Suman has just done his part as written in script lacking the punch and aggression as expected of a Rajni's villain. This is where I feel Raghuvaran or even Prakashraj would have dealt it with aplomb.
At no cost am i gonna talk about the movie's crux. But having read Prashanth's article I feel it is injustice to despise the movie completely. From my opinion Rajni's movies since the 90's have basically lacked good storylines with Thalapathi, Padiyappa & Muthu apart. But, for an actor who is full of grace, style and charisma I doubt if that would really hamper the movie at all. So is the case in Sivaji. Shankar has tried passing the message in a different way(atleast intended to) and has clearly not shown any innovation in his ideas. The movie might lack logic as Prashanth had pointed out in the CPR scene. But frankly Rajni's mass comes from B and C sectors who definitely would'n know a thing about it. So to me that's acceptable though he is a software engineer. And Prashanth remember afterall he is a software engineer who could amass 200 crores just by working here for a decade or so. We only wish. So forget logics and commonsense. And to the next claim on Prashanth's as to why Rajni did not hire an advocate to enforce his issues is probably anyone's guess, considering the project quote. For all, the movie might have so many negatives but the one positive that is Rajni is good enough for a 3 hr entertainer. All that a Rajni fan would want is sit, watch the spectacle that is Rajni. The Superstar on his part has done an excellent job in assisting vivek with his catchy linefits and spot on comedies. The Sivaji,MGR, Kamal spoof was thoroughly enjoyable and so was the climax mimics by Chinni et al. The 'Motta' boss get up reminded us of rajni's yesteryears as villain. In all Rajni has carried the whole weight on his shoulders and delivered an enjoyable, stylish and a charismatic performance that makes Sivaji a clear winner among his most recent movies. To put matters in one line 'kettaley adhiruthula' is exactly what sivaji storm is. So to all,the advice would be rush to the theatres watch the splendour of rajni and enjoy it. Only one man in the Indian film history can turn an absolete story to a super hit and that is undoubtedly Rajni. Big B , SRK please find a hiding Sivaji has arrived to storm theatres all over India and most particularly in US.The fanfare here in Chicago and other major cities is just amazing. First day first show has never been this crazy away from India 'Walk into Sivaji with Sweet Pongal' was the say in Chicago;'Sivaji T-Shirt w/ ticket' in Bay Area and so was it in all major cities in US. That should just sum it all.

Sivaji

It’s the worrrrrrrrrrsht movie that I have seen in a long time. I was talking to a friend who is a big fan of Rajnikanth ( I am too!.. and as footnote in the middle of this paragraph he is gng to see this movie again he says) raised some poignant points about Shankar’s style of film-making. His main crux being we should not be wasting time, money etc.. but the opulence he shows to pander to the public is disgusting.

The movie as such has absolutely no storyline. To think he had spent close to 65 crores on the movie is ludicrous. He doesn’t seem to have heard of the terms screenplay and production values as such even though he is a renowned filmmaker! I mean “ give me a break!”!! Now I have heard people say that Hollywood gets away with just as many big budget blockbusters with ludicrous fantasy storylines. But if you notice they do not compromise on the screenplay, they employ very slick editing and are extremely professional about the way the movie is made. When you think of the budget that Shankar employed you would come to expect at least something slick (logical I have totally given up on from Indian cinema and is not a criteria I evaluate the movies I like coming out from the great Indian Cinema paradise). But what you get is a amateurish ( I am being lenient with my criticism!) effort which is an extreme disappointment. To think I paid 16 dollars for the ticket (on an average I have never been charged more than 8 dollars for any movie here!).

I am not going to give away much of the storyline for the benefit of those who havnt seen it.. but come on the guy is supposed to be a graduate from America and is extremely surprised when a doctor ( Raghuvaran) performs CPR! A 6th grade boy-scout knows what CPR is! And then the character of Sivaji wants to invest his hard earned 200 crores back home. He is supposed to be a software analyst by profession. But he cannot hire a bunch of lawyers to make his investment legitimate and needs to be defeated by the “system”! What BULL CRAP! And then to make the movie a hit you have dialogues like “ the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer”. Isn’t that just pandering to the public? I am not questioning the fact that poverty is a big problem. But its not like the rich industrialists are all just big black asses and all the poor are angels in disguise and have hearts of gold. You have various characters in all walks of life. Why cant filmmakers accept that and come up with at least some good variations rather than mundane variations on the same story that has been building the foundations of Indian cinema.

Shankar by the way says that this is not the type of cinema that I want ot make but have been tagged at by producers and distributors after the humongous success of Indian ( that I must say was a brilliant movie ) and have been forced to use the formula of spending about 10 crores on the sets of each song and the same story line in all subsequent films. That is total nonsense!

The only good thing about the movie is Shriya and her tit shots.. everything else is below par including Viveks comedy ( though a few handpicked sequences are decent).. If I could give negative rating I would give -1 out of five stars.

The Rupee vs. the Dollar- A Macro Economical Analysis from the perspective of an asinine individual

If you thought I have any kind of an opinion on that my mission is accomplished and I am right now rolling over the floor laughing!

I am seriously of the belief that Calvin is the greatest modern philosopher. A couple of comic strips really stood out as to a few issues I have been thinking about. The first of which illustrates as

Isn’t this an epitome of all our ideas as far as the middle and upper middle class goes. We don’t do anything about the situation.. we like to blame everything around us and I have heard a number of people say that is the prime reason they do not want to settle back home in India. That was certainly not in my mind when I came to pursue a postgraduate degree here. The only thing on my mind was a new adventure and exploration of something that I felt I would want to be doing in years to come. When I hear my parents and relatives discussing political situations, road conditions, garbage problems they all get passionate and love blaming every politico in the most horrible way possible. Not to support any of those horrible politicos but are not we equally to blame! We do absolutely nothing about the situation. We apparently have enough to deal with in winng daily bread and watching “saas-bahu” serials be it in hindi or tamil. We cant even get out society organized to clean up the neighbourhood and 75 percent of the people in the neighbourhood would surely crib like hell if any kind of proposal was brought in where they would have to spend some money collectively! The thing with the middle class is that though we advocate capitalism we are all closet socialists who want as many freebees as possible but do not want to be repressed for it.

The other illustration

I saw pirates 3 Spidey 3 and Shrek3 both the three of them on the opening days totally pandering to the Hollywood summer franchising. Now I am a fan of the fantasy franchise and liked all three movies unlike a lot of ppl I dragged along with me. Fortunately no pain was meted out to me for my efforts. Now the thing is that Hollywood just doesn’t know when to kill a successful franchise. All three movies left pace for a fourth to be made. It started with sequels then went to trilogies and now the fashion is just keep going after the star wars thingy. That’s why I like JK Rowlings resolve in maintaining some artistic dignity in completely killing the HP fantasy with the seven books and not returning with HPs repressed son or anything ( in this of-course I am going by her interviews and hopefully she sticks by it!)
Bollywood is gng that way alright and catching on to the marketing strategy required to cash in on the success!

DMK-Sun TV rift

Looks like the rift between the media giant and the ruling party is happening after all!
Karunanidhi is celebrating his birthday today. Sun TV was all set to cover the events as usual, but it turned out that it was not to be. Reportedly a high party official from DMK called Sun TV and told them that they need not cover the event as the party has invited Raj TV to do so. Sun TV is also beginning to evacuate its offices at the Anna Arivalayam.

Meanwhile, Raj TV has 'officially' joined DMK. And its Managing Director Raajhendran had said only he had joined the party and not the channel and that the channel would continue to provide neutral coverage as always! Word is going around that DMK is all set to launch as many as 12 channels with the help of Raj TV's expertise. DMK also is launching its own flagship channel 'Kalaignar TV'. Reportedly the yet-to-be launched channel has already purchased the telecast rights of Rajini's yet-to-be released movie 'Sivaji' for a whopping price which even Sun TV was not able to pay.

And Sun TV's coverage of Kalaignar's birthday has been rather mute, and understandably so.

On an offnote, Jayalalitha came out with a statement that DMK had ordered ADMK's headquarters in Royapettah (I think got the location right) as it was flouting CMDA guidelines or some similar nonsense. Jaya had come out strongly against DMK and its mentor Karunanidhi and has said something to the tune of "we will not rest till these perpetrators are brought down".

DOGGG....too much of media bashin eh?? here is something a bit different...

And as I said earlier, I am back. I just finished reading a very interesting book...well at least for people like me who take a lot of interest in subjects like world politics and more specifically politics of the Islamic world. FRONTLINE PAKISTAN by Zahid Hussain gives you the story of independent Pakistan, may be or may be not the insider story but certainly chronologically lists various events that have shaped up Pakistan and how the growth of Islamic terrorism has taken shape. The book covers areas that not necessarily find space in the media in India which is shocking considering the fact that as a neighboring country, events that occur in Pakistan must be important for us both at face value and strategically. Well the Indian gov has better sources to get "news" on Pakistan but still putting it in a newspaper would do little harm. The book starts off with the regimes that have changed and the policies of these regimes and how islamization of Pakistan starts under general Zia and the whole story after that. The funny part is the islamization of Pakistan has a link to India too…it is the deobandi school of thought that along with the wahhabis of Saudi Arabia is leading the revolution The book extensively covers the terrorist operations right from the anti soviet operations with the CIA in cahoots to today’s jihad and gives lots of insights into the working of militants from let, harkat, al qaeda and all the bunch...and more importantly how they actually are hugely popular organizations...unlike the general mindset we have in India that TERRORISTS HAVE NO RELIGION...TERRORISTS HAVE NO SUPPORT...more importantly the book focuses on the Musharraf regime and how it has been playing the double game of being successful while countering international terrorists and been miserable while countering the growing terrorism back home... no not in terms of Kashmir but the huge sectarian conflicts-not well covered in Indian media-growing clout of madrasas and mullahs, compromises he makes to be in power. The book also goes through the role of the ISI, how it has grown to be much bigger than the government, the islamization that has also got the ISI army and the militants on one platform and increasingly have squeezed out Musharraf. overall pretty good book...seriously speaking very objective in its descriptions that’s why I earlier said the book did not have "insider info"...it is a compilation of events with almost zero bias even against INDIA( something ram guha's book is not... talking about INDIA after Gandhi...ram shows his own biases...just started reading), is a bit sympathetic to Musharraf...well even I am now...because looking at the way things are shaping up with respect to indo-pak and in general how a liberal pak would be more helpful to India’s cause. It is better to have an untrustworthy pro west military leader than an Islamic general who by the way are in the paki army in scores and are waiting to get Musharraf out. And after reading the book I am rather glad that these guys are out of India and not a part of the undivided India, which a lot of my ideologues dream of. Find time to get a copy and go through...

I'm back

just finished with the MBA essay prep yesterday and thought I should get back to posting...and what else could I start off with but the MS university artist freedom issue( sandy... will get back with my thoughts on the women’s rights in a couple of days...have a couple of other issues I want to write on)..Neway let me get to this...so on an eventful day we have an internal art exhibition happening in MS univ but of course other than professors we have art collectors and gallery owners and "eminent ppl" attending...and we have the HINDUTVA BRIGADE...lol...had to use the word considering its popularity with the media and especially how one of the headlines today anchors pronounces it. And as usual vandalism etc and the poor kid is put behind bars. So now arises an important question of how the right wing Hindu is preventing the Indian civilization from progressing in a liberal direction. Let me get to my view...ideally the artist should not even bother anybody. Nobody should be giving damn about what he wishes to potray.but unfortunately we do not live in such a world and it is essential to engage in competitive vandalism to protect ones interests. And why the competitive vandalism? The media in this country (forget the right wing sympathetic papers or the couple of neutral papers we have in this country...they do not count) has taken to Jawahar's policy of secularism where the minority...not necessarily religious...has to be treated extra special while the majority can be kicked a couple of times in its balls. I find it amusing that the Danish cartoons which incidentally portray reality if u ask me (will write about a book related to this...that was one of the other things I wanted to write about) were crude offensive derogatory a threat to civilization and all the crap I can think of. All the media was speaking in the sympathetic voice, condemning it, I could not see a shabnam hasmi or a teesta or artists protesting in favor of artistic freedom. Now let me get to MF who at this age has t live outside his mother land because of the atrocities of......I do not wish to list his paintings but I never have come across one painting where his artistic freedom comes to fore when the subject relates to Moslems. It is these double standards that get me a bit irritated...now let me accept that Modi is behind the hate in Gujarat...by that logic Manmohan must be behind the hate in India as it is the central gov home ministry that has filed cases against MF. Let me finally finish off with this thought. WE ALL MUST ENCOURAGE TOTAL ARTISTIC FREEDOM AS THE ENLIGHTENED OF THIS SOCIETY SAY...THEN WHY NOT PROMOTE PEDOPHILIA AND ACCEPT IT AS FREEDOM OF AN INDIVIDUAL TO EXPLORE INTERESTING SUBJECTS???

p.s.- not that I would love to see pedophiles roam around just an area I wanted to bring up as we often shun it away from public space...considering the fact that Indian children are one of the most vulnerable children in the world and more than 55% have experienced some form of exploitation within the family.

A day of lies, deceit and sycophancy

The celebrations were a two day affair. So my coverage does not end with my previous post. At the Island grounds you saw the UPA in full strength eulogising MK. But what startled me was the extent to which the speakers went to praise MK. Agreed, it was a function to felicitate MK and you can not expect them to lash out at him. But some remarks bordered on shameless flattery.

A few gems:

"....Mr. Karunanidhi was a man who had completely rejected casteism in his personal and political life ...." - I.K Gujral. This is tantamount to praisng Hitler as a statesman.

The DMK thrives in casteism. MK does not even spare his family memners when he chooses to play the caste card. When the opposition charges him for being anti- dalit, he retorts by saying that his daughter-in-law is from that community.

If Subramanya Swamy/Mani Shankar Aiyar/ JJ (or any Brahmin owned Newspaper for that matter) attacks him politically, he dismisses them by terming their allegations "Awaal Budhi".His anti-Brahminism needs no elaboration, he has described his Government as "of non upper castes for non upper castes by non upper castes" in a poem written by him on 2 July 2006 in 'Dinakaran'.

When someone has him on the mat, he uses his Brahmastra. His typical reply will be.. " Just because I am from a backward community, the parties are targetting me"

Recently when anarchy ruled the roost during local body elections, the State Election
Commissioner , Mr Naresh Gupta, came under fire. MK sprang to his support by saying ." Other than the fact that he is an OBC, he has not done any wrong"

These are some of the most recent instances. It might take years for me to compile the complete list of his slurs and I have better business than doing that.

.."Mr. Karat said, he was also a champion of federalism.." .

MK is someone who maintains that the reasons for demanding a separate Dravida Nadu are valid even today. And a person who makes no bones about his separationist ideology is praised as a champion of federalism.

Its intersting to note the reaction of the opposition to this golden jubilee. AIADMK has termed it fake (Jaya TV terms this Poli Ponvizha..). They have a point. MK was elected to the assembly for the first time in 1957. But his tenure has not been continuous. . A look at the DMK website that chronicles his stints as MLA will show that from 1984-89 he was not a member of the legislative Assembly( from 84-86,he was a memebr of the now defunct Legislative council, a state eqivalent of the Rajya Sabha) .He resigned as MLA in 1991 when AIADMK swept to power. He did not attend a single assembly session from 2001-06.I still am at a loss to understand how they arrived at 50 years.

The DMK had invited the president to preside over the function. But JJ raised these points and appealed to the president not to come. When , during her last tenure, JJ invited president Kalam to the assembly, MK strongly objected saying the president should not come and praise the anti-people, anti-democratic JJ government. This government is not any different from its predecessor when it comes to being anti-democratic or anti-people. So it was an opportunity for JJ to take revenge.

President Kalam, after it became apparant that he is not getting a second term , has been remarkably bold. He first returned the Office of Profit bill(that primarily was a Save Sonia bill) , and fearing that he may not give a Bihar- style assent, the Congress refrained from dismissing the UP govt. Continuing that trend, he declined the DMK's invitation to attend the celebrations citing "foreign engagements".

The tamasha did not stop there. In a move that must have sure given Mr Kalam some qualms, JJ mischievously issued a statemnt thanking him for 'entertaining her appeal and declining MK's invitation'. There is never a dull moment when it comes to a spat between JJ and MK.

So in effect, the very fact that he has completed 50 years has been called to question. It is only fitting that a person who has relied on deceit, lies and misinformation for decades to keep him in power has chosen the same to splurge with public money.

Golden Jubilee Gift

The function to mark the 50 th anniversary of Mk's tenure in the legislative assembly passed off peacefully, much to the relief of Chennai. The city was under siege with thousands of buses swarming the city from early afternoon and gridlocking OMR(Old mahabalipuram Rd), ECR and GST road. I had to visit a friend in Thiruvanmiyur and was bracing myself for the worst.

All the IT companies thought they were smart in asking their employess to leave by 3 since the function was to begin at 6. But, the real problem started with them as thier buses combined with those carrying the DMK men in throwing traffic completely out of gear. The trip from Sholiganallur to Thiruvanmiyur depot that normally takes 20 mins took me an hour and a half. Imagine the plight of those who had to reach Parrys.. You had the DMK buses lined all along from the LB road junction till Uthandi on ECR. Their men were atop buses( when the seats inside were empty) hooting and howling. The drivers had contempt for traffic rules and were just honking their way. Well, that could be attributed to cadre enthusiasm and would'nt have been any different had it been a function to felicitate JJ. But, this does not justify their unruly behaviour.

I stayed put at my friend's place till the function started and started at 7.30 wanting to beat the return traffic. But the traffic was no better in the Thiruvanmiyur area. It was still overflowing with buses. It was a nightmare till SardarPatel road. But once past SP road, the traffic was very smooth and well regulated. That motorists and IT company buses chose not to ply at this time greatly contributed. This was the story on the ECR side. But I am told things were much worse on the GST road side with VVIP convoy movement. With the grade separator work in progress at Kathipara, the last thing motorists wanted was a VVIP convoy movement during the evening peak hour. I am told Wallajah Road was closed to traffic. Thank god, I was not anywhere near Kamaraj Salai Or Anna Salai.

There was also a report in The Hindu that the DMK men had a brawl with the owners of an Adyar restaurant and ransacked it(the restaurant was not named).Long Live Democracy.

Dont say sock darling.. Strike is an ugly enough word.

“The Philadelphia story” is a movie that was released in 1940. Why am writing about this romantic comedy.. am I growing sappy being lonely horny and virile.. (proved by the fact that Santosh saw spidey 3 based on my suggestion..;).. lukd like he would hav murdered me if he wasn’t that many miles apart..;)..).. maybe all of that at some level but the main reason is that I found something more as to the roots of the fourth estate. Now I am sure you did not see that coming.

The movie as such has a brilliant script and is extremely comical. The whole satire with very well defined characters is held together with some brilliant acting from three of my all time favorites Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart. If you got till here don’t give up..:).. Jimmy Stewart plays a reporter in the movie who is disgruntled by the fact that he has to cover social events in uptown Philadelphia rather than do some hard hitting factual writing. He is asked to cover one of the most upscale weddings ( Katherine Hepburn’s) and his editor gets him exclusive passage to get the behind the scene scoop on the wedding of the century by blackmailing her EX (Cary Grant) with some info on Hepburn’s dad.

The editor is extremely unscrupulous and will do anything to cater to the public which acts in the form of some justice towards the end of the film. It told me something about the media. This was a movie made almost 60 years ago and the issues of the fourth estate catering to what the public wants to hear was very powerfully said in a very comical storyline given that wasn’t the main storytelling point. On a side note the screenplay was brilliant because it was adapted from a Broadway stageplay .

Do watch the movie if you can find a copy.. I would give it a rating of 4/5 stars.

Really?

What nonsense!?!
The state's exchequer being plundered to the dismay of the taxpayers to honour this guy who has already been honoured enough in the past with golden pen, etc,.
The Hindu is proud it seems. Absolute sycophancy!! And for no apparent reason too.
And as usual major traffic diversions.
Whenever any of my friends in US say they hate India and US is lot better, I argue with them to the hilt. But at times like these, I wonder....

'Media'cre reporting....

Here are some excerpts from a heartwarming news piece I read in The Hindu.

"..it was heartening to see India's top order batsmen play so fluently. Sourav Ganguly exuded confidence with his masterly display of stroke-play, while Yuvraj Singh and Rahul Dravid were pleasant to watch.
Virender Sehwag, who had looked a bit troubled against the rising balls to his ribcage, pummelled Ranadeb Bose twice with savage power.
The nearly two-hour session was fully utilised by the coaching staff to put the boys through drills to fine-tune many aspects concerning the game.
Watched by fielding coach Robin Singh, the players spend almost 40 minutes practising pick-up and throws at a single stump, while bowling coach B.K. Venkatesh Prasad put the boys through high catches and ground fielding.
There the boys had a batting session for almost 90 minutes before coming out to play in the centre pitch.
With Prasad watching, almost all the top-ranking bowlers were pushed into bowling to the top-notch batsmen of the country..."

Indian cricketers had one off day in their WC match against the lowly Bangladesh team and were thrown out of the WC. The pitch was nowhere near the standards of an International game. It was a shocker to see such a turning track in an important phase of a World Cup. India, like any other top teams, had never been exposed to such subversive slow pitches. Our poor batsmen, whose minds were already plagued by the thoughts of the measly match fees they get from the BCCI, were in no position to tackle such horrible deliveries and predictably got out. Then our pace bowlers who were accustomed to intimidate batsmen with scorching bouncers were all at sea when bowling to a bunch of kids who were only an inch taller than the stumps. So even an attempt to bowl a yorker went above the heads of the Bangladeshi batsman which resulted in the umpire calling them as wides (as the balls soared above the heads of the batsmen) and all the batsmen had to do was make sure they did not get out and the match was over with the extras being the top scorer.

The point is Indians were surprised: slow pitch, short opposition batsmen, low match fees and poor scheduling that did not ensure a safe passage to the next stage.
But that is passé. Now our batsmen are wiser from their experience. Judging from the above report, all our worries are over now. Ganguly is back with his flourishing drives, which he unleashed against the club bowlers. Sachin has got more fitter and can now play for ten more years. Sehwag has got back his touch by flogging the bowlers who bowled at him in the nets. Our bowling is now under the careful tutelage of Prasad, who in his hey days bowled out the batsmen with his fiery yorkers delivered at 100mph. By asking the club bowlers to intimidate the batsmen by bowling to their weaknesses, he has also brought the batsmen out of their comfort zone and made them play shots, thereby increasing their confidence levels. And prasad who was an electrifying fielder in his times, had also taken upon himself the responsibility of giving fielding drills to old sluggards like yuvraj singh, dinesh karthick amongst others. The BCCI after 'years' of mindless travesty have also finally yielded to the justified claims of our national heroes and decided to hike their match fees. So our poor cricketers no longer to need to worry about how their families will survive in their absence and can concentrate on matches now. And to make sure the cricketers are not distracted by any off field issues like contracts or advertisements we now have them do yoga. Anyways only a couple of people in the entire squad endorse products. The other team members have declined lucrative offers for advertisements, as in their own words it 'conflicts with their bigger interest of playing for the country'.

Now we are going to tour Bangladesh and will rightly prove to those minnows as well as to the world, that their pipe dreams are over. We will thrash them in all games and show them that their success against a team whose guards were down was just an aberration.Australia who had a smooth sail to the finals primarily due to the absence of India as an opposition, will now feel the heat with as much as 21 matches to be played between the two teams in this year.

Meanwhile, sports savvy reporters like the Special Correspondent from The Hindu will keep us updated with the developments in the Indian team, by fairly reporting their day to day activities without any traces of mindless hero worshiping. They will elaborate to us about the team's practice sessions sans any awe in their tones, thereby laying the foundation stones for the future generations of reporting, which will lay emphasis on truthful reporting and critical analysis. The future reporters will take cue from such examples of thoughtful reporting and will only report news that are really worth reporting, instead of wasting the print space, ink and papers for useless bits of writing.
Ah! The future of the fourth estate is in good hands.

Chennai Masala 2

Ek gaaw mein ek kisaan.....

In a coup of sorts, Jayalalithaa, campaigning for the Samajwadi Party, addressed a rally in Allahabad in Hindi. Yes, Hindi.. you heard it right. I am being unjust to the lady by comparing her speech with the famous Ek gaaw mein scene in an old Bagyaraj movie. But, whenever a southie speaks Hindi, you cannot but avoid the comparison. She reportedly delivered a hard hitting, 15 minute speech in chaste Hindi . The crowd responded with shouts of 'Jayalalithaa Zindabad' which reportedly left 'Manya' Mulayamji blushing :)-

Karunanidhi's Pearls

Known for his penchant for writing dialogues, MK recently responded to the Supreme court's refusal to vacate the stay on OBC quotas by angrily saying that the "fate of 100 crore people cannot be left to two men".I wonder if there was any other statement made by any other person -dead or alive- that even comes anywhere close to this gem.

According to MK, a two judge bench can decide only on cases involving two people. To decide on OBC reservation, which according to MK involves over a billion Indians, you need a bench with a billion judges. Assuming that we find a billion judges and constitute a bench, Mk will not have any problems if they too refuse to vacate the stay. That is because, his pimary objection is to the number of people sitting in judgement and not their judgement.Fair enough.

Days later, a two judge bench of the Madras High Court upheld the abolition of the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to professional colleges in TN. They lauded the government for its efforts to ensure 'social justice'. How come these two can decide the fate of 6 crore Tamilians? Will MK oppose this? If this is not double speak, what is?

Politicising Fishermen Deaths

There have been recent incidents of Tamil fishermen being shot dead in the high seas. This disturbing trend, coming in the backdrop of renewed military might of the LTTE, is unabted.MK, meanwhile slammed the Sinhalese govt for firing unprovoked and in true filmi style , warned thatTamilians will not remain mute spectators. ( His typical statements go like this... " innumum madhiya arasu tamizhanain ratham kodhipadhay paarthu kondu irukkadhu endru ninaikiren. Rajni can consider hiring MK 's services for Sivaji).

The Lankan govt categorically denied any involvement in the firings and explicitly stated that its navy has been instructed not to fire on Indian fishermen transgressing the international waters.Meanwhile, there were reports that the Sea Tigers, the naval arm of the LTTE, could be behind the killings to sour relations betwen the two countries. The PMK, MDMK and the DMK which were vociferous in pinning the blame on the Lankan govt, chose not to react .

Now, the DGP of Tamil Nadu has confirmed that the Sea Tigers were behind the killings. How are the LTTE sympathisers planning to respond to this shameful, cowardly act?

Media Mania

It was a bumper fortnight for the media and the Ash-Abhi wedding was the most important event on earth. Headlines Today started the build up a week before the wedding, concentrating on details as silly as the amount of Mehendi to be used for the ceremony. The other channels were no better. They had the temerity to gate crash and attempt to intrude into the privacy of celebrities, but when chased away by the security gaurds , they paint the town red with complaints of high handedness.

The media's single grouse seems to be " What is preventing the Bachchans from even sharing a single pic of the couple?". Well, that's a fair question. But it's the prerogative of the Bachchans. If they choose to dump the media, what's preventing the media from returning compliments? They cannot ....because, news on the Bachchan wedding sells. And to drive their business, they want the Bachchans to oblige and compromise on their privacy. I am no defender of the Bachchans. They need the media for promoting their films, but want them out of the wedding. That speaks volumes for their character. It's a lesson for the media and I bet they would not have learnt it.

Coming back to the news channels, I can atleast excuse HT, but CNN IBN was criminal in its coverage. Despite flogging the wedding to the hilt, it ran a debate on whether the media was right to over hype the wedding. Double speak is not confined to politicians.

Jeppiar and the Isreali connection....

Arent we equal before the eyes of the God?

After the much touted wedding of Aishwarya Rai and Abhsishek Bachan, the couple were seen 'seeking blessings' at Tirupathi. This set me off on a series of thoughts that have bothered me often in the past. What makes them so special that even God metes out a special treatment to them (or is atleast forced to). Its a common fact that nowadays people visiting Tirupathi get 'tagged' for an appointment with the God, and on auspicious days the rendezvous gets delayed by as much as 48 hours, and the devotees have no other choice but to wait after having planned their entire trip to last just a day. And then there is this concept of special darshan (this is not just in Tirupathi though). People who buy the 'tickets' for special darshan get Divine blessings sans crowd's jostlings and long waiting times. Only consolatory thing with Tirupathi being that even if you get these tickets you still end up waiting for a couple of hours till you get to the sanctorum. However on reaching the sanctum sanctorum, when we think all our ordeals are finally over, we only end up being physically pushed away by the 'dedicated' crowd control group with their non-stop 'jarugandi's.

What makes some people so special that they get to sit in front of the deity and perform elaborate poojas, while we are chased away like dogs. Why should they be given the permission to be taken directly to the sanctorum while we endure hours of waiting under the sun on bare foot. And why should a religious establishment embrace the concept of 'pay for easy view' concept. How different is this from cinema theaters, where more you pay, the better is your view of the screen? Arguments like "temple needs revenues like these to sustain themselves", "this the only way to manage a huge crowd" are too specious. So much for socialism and communism.

On an offnote, this is what CNN-IBN has to say about the marraige. Here are the people who create all the hype by showcasing the wedding, interviewing people, and having a panel discuss the implications of this wedding on the 'welfare of the society' and then they form another panel that discusses the implications of the excessive hype that has been surrounding the wedding. And people talk about intelligence while reporting!

MY THOUGHTS AT MIDNIGHT

India seems to be going through this phase of turmoil, if you are willing to call it that. Well I am referring to the recent Narayana Murthy national anthem fiasco and the "national flag” cake case of Sachin...just to name the two famous ones. There have been a couple of others and a few older ones that come to my mind like the Malini ramani cocktail dress in the tricolor. Anyway coming to the main point why is it that we are so agitated with these issues?

To understand this we need to understand the foundation on which India was built...the strong foundation which has managed to surprisingly stay on in spite of the events in the last 20 years-the socialistic structure. The socialistic structure was a choice Nehru made on behalf of India...well most people accepted it back then and voila, India was an imitation of the soviet union...maybe a cheap imitation or maybe not. And now; if you are a socialist nation then you follow their norms right?? Well obviously. So there we have the basic norms namely, a Hugh republic day parade displaying all your army might (the fact that your technology was outdated did not matter)...restricting the use of the national falg, embelem and other symbols to official use, jailing anybody daring to tow the official line and of course one of the favourite controls-controling the intellectual mindspace. And by the way it does not matter if Russia has stopped its "might display”:D.

So now it must be fairly obvious why we have such anger being vented on the street. It is a part of the socialistic set up. Anyone who goes against the "rules" is not to be tolerated. But then I find something really amusing...the rules are framed in the first place to project a strong nation...and if a nation can be insulted by a mere anthem or the cutting of a cake or by somebody sneezing on the flag, the nation just does not deserve to exist.

Thought I must add this... Before anybody goes on to call the protests political; pleaseeee. Members of political parties are people too. The membership should not be reason enough to bar them from protesting. It is Hippocratic to ok the Jessica Lall protests but not the Chennai bandh on reservations. More on the reservations later...lets get back to NRN...and the "IT BOYS"...he totlally deserved whatever he got...the protsts were less about the national anthem and more about his statements on the cauvery issue.MR murthy, you might get your appointment with the chief minister and prime minister to get your "incentives" namely tax sops to setup a "world class" company but the farmer can only dream of such appointments. When people have no other way to be heard; disrupting the life of you guys is the only way out to be heard..so chill Mr Murthy.
THERE WAS A POST THAT SAID THAT THE COMMON CHENNAI CITIZEN WAS SCARED OF OPPOSING THE GOONS...TYPICAL 2% TAMIL POPULATON RESPONSE.: D...infact if one had watched any news channel chennai was the city where most people supported the confrontation and bandh.after all it pays to support what benifits you.

KINDLY NOTE: THE AUTHOR FULLY ENDORSES THE MAAI BAAP CONTROL OF RESOURCES AND INTELLECT.

The Life of Brian

This is a movie of epic proportions and an ode to what humor is for the intellectuals. It takes inspiration from the bible and the events of the movie are based in the biblical age. The movie starts with the entry of the three wise men into a poverty stricken household where a mother is taking care of her baby. The three men try to bless the baby only to be stopped by the acrimonious mother only until they say they have “gifts” for the baby. It so turns out that they have entered the wrong poverty stricken household and instead of blessing Jesus they have blessed Brian!

The movie is extremely hilarious and is way ahead of its time. It ridicules terrorist organization s and even has a number of its own in the film prominently named as the PFW (the Peoples front of Judea) an organization against the oppression of Romans. This surely draws inspiration from the PLO! The plot has many twists and turns’, ending with a lovely song as “Brian” is crucified.

The film was released in early 1979 and caused a loud uproar from various religious heads. I know of many situations on in India where religion and the caste system have made issues of non issues. I have also heard a lot of intellectuals saying that this would never happen in the west! A number of moral policing organizations lobbied to have this film banned. At the time in Britain the local community leaders could prevent a film from being screened within their community if they felt it to be “amoral”. And this was done in a lot of counties just based on hear say. The movie as such has nothing to talk about Jesus his views and neither is it sacrilegious.

This just goes to show that everywhere in the world there are people who blindly follow religion and become self-proclaimed moral policemen and there are enough people who just like to blindly follow a cause without a droplet of thought put into the ratification. Parallels can be drawn to the 92 Bombay riots or the Ayodhya incident any other mass religious movement! Freedom of speech and thought is very important for a society to grow and humor is an important element to rectify the vice of a society. The Romans had their humor instruments so did any of the many glorious empires from the past in India ratified by the myriads of folk tales that we have been subjected to from our grandmothers!

Ps- this link chronicles the media circus that followed the release of this satire. I know it is about 50 minutes but is very interesting!

Chennai Masala

This section will have a quick round up of newsworthy events . I will try to update it on a weekely/ fortnightly basis

Sun and Sky dont see eye to eye

Never shy of brushing the wrong side of the law,Sun TV has done it yet again. It is flatly denying signals to Tata-Sky, a rival DTH operator, in order to ensure the success of its own DTH service due in July. Despite the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) ruling in favour of the Tata-Sky JV, Sun TV is refusing to budge. Interestingly, TDSAT, comes under the Ministry of Telecom headed by none other than Dayanidhi Maran !!! It may be noted that Maran was accused of trying to arm twist the Tatas into a partnership- for rolling out DTH services with SunTV last year -which the Tatas firmly resisted.

Narayana Murthy is a traitor

Kannada zealots have plummeted to new lows. They want the Infosys Chairman 'thrown out of ' Karnataka and if possible, out of India. This outrageous demand is in response to NRN's reported remarks on the national anthem.During a visit by President Kalam last week to the Infosys Mysore campus, an instrumental version of the national anthem was played. When NRN was asked why the anthem was not sung, he is reported to have said that singing the anthem might make the foreign trainees in the campus uncomfortable. I am at a loss to undertsand the logic behind this, nevertheless, NRN has promptly apologized. Not content with that, the zealots are pouring scorn over him and are gunning for his blood. They are urging the govt not to provide any more land to Infosys and say Karnataka will be are better off without Infosys. All this at a time when Infosys reported revenues in excess of 13000 cr for the year ended 06-07 and a net profit over 4000 cr for the year. The ever increasing headcount now stands at a little over 71000.

Bounty Time

Talking of profits, its bonanza time for IT employees as salary hikes are normally given in April. They (me included :)- )are watching the financial results of their companies with bated breath to see if they can rake in some moolah. In the war for talent, salaries are expected to go up by 12-15% but P Chidambaram will ensure that the hike is offset by inflation, additional surcharge, cess and what not. Guess what? This additional cess is to fund the OBC reservation bill. Heard of double jeopardy?

CD row

Tech savvy-ness and the BJP seem poles apart. Hi-tech misadventures- be it the hidden cameras in Tehelka or the glitzy India Shining campign- have landed the party in a spot of bother and history has repeated itself. The party is accused of circulating CDs with communally inflamatory content in Uttar Pradesh, where the polls are underway. The self appointed custodians of secularism are up in arms and have petitioned the EC to de recognize the BJP and the EC has promptly served a show-cause notice. Sensing that things are boomeranging, the BJP has disowned the CD .I wonder where these parties are when the DMK indulges in majority bashing and particularly Brahmin-bashing. BJP CD Transcript

First Salvo Part 2

The law providig 69% reservation in TN , over and above the 50% ceiling that the SC has repetedly emphasised, was mischieveously included in the 9 th schedule by JJ. Laws under 9 th schedule are beyond judicial scrutiny. It was envisaged my Nehru for initating land reforms but soon became a tool in the hands of the politicians who incuded as many as 274 laws under it !!!! The SC has questioned the legality of enacting laws at will and including it in the ninth schedule and this is giving sleeps nights to the likes of MK.

When MK resorts to political stunts, you can rest assured that all is not well.He fears that the quota law in TN might be struck down. He is pre empting the SC by upping the ante against it. A mouth watering confrontation with the judiciary is on the cards. Will keep you guys posted.

Tail Piece: The latest on 27% OBC quota...IIMs have been asked to withhold their admission list till April 21. The HRD ministry is bending over backwards to get the stay vacated. The IIMs meanwhile have announced that if there is no communication from the centre even after 21 st, it will go ahead with the admissions without the additional 27% reservations and without increasing the intake

Diarios de motocicleta

This is one movie that I had been keeping away from. I knew the movie was about Che Guevara one of the revolutionary South American socialists. Too be frank I did not have any interest in learning about why Che revolutionized south America in the fifties and the sixties, along with Fidel Castro specially in a “doccumentry”. I was hence prejudiced about the film and hence did not even care to give it a chance.

Somehow fate brought me together with the film one lonely cold night. It’s a beautiful film and extremely well made and is not an advert to socialism or how Che Guevara brought about a revolution and certainly not a doccumentry. It is about a road trip that Che and his friend took in the early fifties from Argentina to Venezuela right after graduation from medical school. It took them close to 12 months to complete the journey the movie chronicles the events that happen along the way. It’s a very well made movie and extremely touching as well.

I went on to read up on Che Guevara. If you are wondering who this guy is I am sure you must have come across him on the back of some T-shirt sometime in your life and wondered the same then.

This got me thinking about the socialism concept and why it was so required in the fifties in India, South America and any third world country and probably going back a little further the early twenties in Russia. The plight of an overwhelming number of people was really bad as compared to a major few. It was a strong cause for socialism. But my feeling is that neither a purely socialistic society nor a purely capitalistic society would work in a modern economy. That’s why I feel that the Indian constitution was way ahead of its time. But the principles are far from being adopted. The rules are being bent so as to help causes such as Murli wrote home about! We need some sort of revolutions and some foresighted people to rally around what our constitution really is about!

Che was assassinated by the CIA sometime in 1967 because the Americans where shit scared of his revolutionary ideas, the way he was implementing them and of course the fact that he was a proclaimed socialist. I can never understand the fear of the American politicos on this and why they have tried and keep trying to twist socialist countries.

First Salvo

The reservation rage is back. The 2 judge bench of the Supreme Court consisting of Justices Arijit Pasayat and Lokeshwar Singh Panta, in a stinging verdict, has stayed the quota coteries' plans to push through the 27% reservation this academic year.In a particularly embarrassing observation, the court said "Nowhere else in the world is there competition to assert backwardness and then to claim we are more backward than you."It went on to add "Differentiation or classifications for special preference must not be unduly unfair to the persons left out of the favoured groups".

The court did not stop with that. It said "Though it is submitted that the number of seats available for the general category is not affected, that is really no answer to the broader issue. If there is possibility of increase in seats in the absence of reservation, it could have gone to the general category"

Now, cut to Chennai. March 29,2007. TN CM is in Mahindra City inaugurating the new BMW factory. Hearing the stay order, he dashes off to Anna Arivalayam , gets into a huddle with his allies, expresses 'shock' over the verdict and calls for a TN banch on Mar 31 (Sat).

Mar 31, Chennai. Typical bandh rituals Sun TV declares it a massive success and proudly announces that TN was completely shut down. Jaya TV meanwhile reports the difficulties of stranded passengers and flays MK for causing 'inconvenience' to the people (Ironically, JJ is against the SC verdict, but blames the stay on the inefficient handling of the case . ADMK boycotted the bandh accusing the TN govt of 'indifference' towards protecting 'Social justice'.
I had a nice time watching these channels as their news bulletins were more comical than any comedy show on air.Taking a cue, AP shut down on April 4. And Gemini TV and ETV took over from Sun and Jaya.

Back in Delhi, parties flay the SC order. Close followers of Indian politics will be hardly surprised that the very parties that extensively quote the SC judgements when it comes to Ayodhya or the Gujarat riots, unashamedly question its authority. Indian politics thrives in double speak and hypocricy. The better you are at it, the farther you go. And our 'netas' know that well.

Barely had the Arcot veerasamy vs madras High court spat ( where he compared the courts to a 'Katta Panchayathu' and demanded that the judges be shown their place. Google search for details:)-) died down , the TN govt(which is synonymous with the DMK) has , by calling the bandh, mounted pressure on the SC. MK, the master demagogue, conveniently (mis)interpreted the people's unwillingness to take on the DMK hooligans as a public endorsement of his stand and gave himself a pat on his back.

But ever wondered why MK is so unnerved? I'll answer that next week....
