Wake up call for all Tamilians

With the announcement of the New Seven Wonders of the World, every Indian has a reason to smile. Our Taj Mahal has fought a tough 'competition' and has been elected as one of the New Seven Wonders. One thing I have been wondering about is what makes something a wonder. Is it the sheer architectural brilliance or the popularity among the voters? Take the Christ Redeemer as an example. It neither has the 'beauty of the Taj' (Which every Indian swears to or atleast that is what the media says. Moreover, I am sure that half the Indians who had voted for the Taj had never seen been to it.) nor is it as long as the Great Wall of China (its length overshadowed probably only by the number of nominations it would have received from the Word's most populated nation). If the Christ Redeemer could be a finalist, then I am sure we can nominate many more from India that can match it stone-by-stone, unless otherwise the event organizers had a rule that there has to be only one entry from each nation.

India, I am sure, can offer few more architectural wonders than the stereotyped image of the Mausoleum named the Taj Mahal (RSS might beg to differ though, especially with a section of the society claiming that the Taj Mahal was not built by Shah Jahan but rather acquired by him from a Hindu King Jai Singh, and that the Taj originally was a Vedic temple). For example, take the majestic Thiruvalluvar statue at Kanyakumari. I wonder in what way this statue is inferior compared to the Christ Redeemer. In fact, it matches up to it in many ways and even overshadows it in many aspects.

The Thiruvalluvar statue is 2 meters taller, weighs ten times more and considering the inflation over 70 years from the time the Christ Redeemer was constructed, it has costed us less. I am not sure what are the ideologies the Redeemer stands for (if that ever is a reason for being nominated as a World Wonder), but our Thiruvalluvar statue stands for a lot as one gathers from this article.

I visited Kanyakumari last September and I was awestruck by the Thriuvalluvar statue (No, I am not kiddding here). I admit that I was not poignantly moved by the statue per se. But the location was breath taking. The point where it stands is probably one of the roughest seas you will encounter in life. One can get to see beautiful sunsets with the statue in the foreground. And the winds are so strong that one has to be careful so as not to be blown away. After all this structure had withstood the monstrosity of the Tsunami in 2004.

I am sure not many are aware of the fact that our very own Madurai Meenakshi Temple was nominated in the preliminary rounds. Had every Tamilian voted atleast twice for Madurai Meenakshi Temple, we would have easily got more than 14 crore votes for it and we would be having it in the final list now.
So it stands to conclude that we Tamils have lost out due to our inaction. The Champion of the Tamil Classes Dr.Kalaignar has to take up the cause of Tamils and ensure that Tamils do not lose out on this parade of pride on the Global front. Such assertations of Tamilian superiority can only facilitate the declaration of Tamil not only as a national language but also as a Global Language.

Disclaimers:
1. The author has nothing personally against the Christ Redeemer or the Taj Mahal. He belongs to the group of people who have never been to any of the Wonders.
2. The author does not claim to be a Tamil partisan and disassociates himself from any hardcore groups.
3. The author refuses to have the honour of giving the 'Champions of Tamilians' title to our beloved Chief Minister. The media has already done that and deserves full praise for it.

in putting up a disclaimer you try and cut any kind of discussion that you would want to invoke.. a typicl tam brahm type of article from the deppest conservatism of chennai.. and the disclaimer is also typical in the sense trying to potray tam brams as being non rascist and open to comments!

Aiyoo aiyoo!! Bloodie Tam Brahm :P
The disclaimer is intended to be for fun only. Of course it is also supposed to mean though I invoke the prowess of Kalaignar I am not DMK activist and I cannot criticize the Redeemer or the Taj only because I have not been there. Simple. Had I been there my opinions would have been laid out threadbare B-)

@prashant: could not have put it better....
@sandy: the sarcasm was evident in the disclaimer but that in itself is a way of defensive writing....

neway coming to the main topic.....the total votes polled were around 35crs...allover the world...so somuch for popular choice....so if the chinese and indians were to vote like crazy...all the wonders would only be from these two countries....

now the taj mahal.....been there so i guess i can write what u could not....nothing great about it...infact the design is identical to quite a few other " Mausoleums" around delhi and agra...if being built in marble is grt then...weve virtually got a birla mandir in every bloody town.and there is one coming in agra or probably has come which is supposed to be bigget than the taj.so what else can be said...oh yeah monument of love.....ah give me a break....so why the taj????

MARKETING....there wuld have been some jackass marketing guy who started building the capaign 50 yrs ago and voila it is paying off...it is just like anyother marketing story..take the tirupati temple...back in the 70s the crouds used to be in a few thousands...not much of the queue thing etc...now....r people all of a sudden more relegious...no...the guys succeded in building a halo that come here ur dreams will be fullfilled...and bang slowly crouds started swellin...hope u get the pic....all u need is a marketing guy and trust me run a campaign with a story for 50 years and even the lighthouse on marina can be converted into a wonder.

adding to ur list is the rameshwaram temple...elora caves and a temple there carved out of a mountain...and many many more....

christ the redeemer..thank god the tamilians were asleep...else we could have had muka as one of the wonders.

What is special about the rameshwaram temple?
I was there recently, but cannot recollect anything great about it though.
My parents have been to the Taj. Though I should receive their opinions as that of a generation separated by years and differet in tastes compared to ours, the opinion was the same as yours: boring, dull, and eeriely dark.

OMG!! I hope MK or PMK's ramadas dont get to read this... if they do, their blood will boil at the'injustice' meted out to
aiyan valluvar... they probably might even see a 'conspiracy(a 'parpana soozchi' would be politically convenient) in keeping
the valluvar statue out.. Sun TV .. oh no..Raj TV's 'investigation jouros( never mind the fact that they dont exist) might as well do a sensational story to unearth the fact that those behind selecting the Christ Redeemer were men owing allegience to the AIADMK to prevent the kalaingnar-built statue getting global prominance.

But frankly speaking, apart from the mkting guy ( that Abhiram mentioned) laughing his way to the bank, does this entire gimmick-from which the UNESCO disassocited itself-serve any purpose? Visitors will continue to throng the Taj or the Valluvar Statue or the Meenakshi temple irrespective of whether its a wonder or not..

Well, for me the 8 th wonder is how a nation of a billion could so easily be led into believing a swiss man's marketing stunt

@sandy: ramwshwaram temple-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramanathaswamy_Temple%2C_Rameswaram

@Abhiram - U hav missed Tanjavur Big temple. Now let any one in the world explain to me how the pedestal standing on top of the main tower reached there?

and @ Murli - Paarpaana Soozhchi will not work, bcos their islaamiya sagotharargal madhikkum kattidam got the honour :P

Mambalam Mani said...

@sriram:
Dont u know how the tower's sigaram was made?
They had a 4 mile or so ramp built to the top oof the tower and rolled the stone on top of wooden logs by having elephants push it to the top
There is even a video documentary by Discovery Channel on this
I have seen it....

Asuri Sudarsanan said...

@ Santhosh - It was for the Big temple, and I asked for the same too... The Discovery ppl wanted to explain it that way, but failed (they admitted it too) and their claim was not 4 miles, it was more than 20. the question is still green!

What's so wonderful about the seven wonders anyway? I personally wouldn't cross the road to see the Taj Mahal. (And I've been there once- not taling off my hat). Monument of love..as abhiram said, give me a break. There are many other things in the world, great architecture. It's all just being trivialised. No wonder the UNESCO have decided to disassociate themsleves from the whole show..

As for our slumber when we should have been feverishly voting away, well, (yawn) why bother??

Oops...there is of course tourism..but seriously I prefer the Madurai Meenakshi koil without a bunch of irritating camera toting tourist. The Taj is welcome to all that.
