1947- A Love Story

It's official. The country's first Prime Minister was in love with the wife of the last viceroy general. That there was more to the Nehru- Edwina Mountbatten saga than meets the eye was common knowledge. But now there is a stamp of legitimacy to what was till now a rumour. Lady Pamela Mountbatten, the daughter of Lord Mountbatten, writes in her book about the affair her mother had with Nehru.

She says
"The love Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had for Lady Edwina Mountbatten was chivalric and it was not physical"

If it had not been for a damning revelation, this could have been yet another extra-marital affair between two consenting adults, though it involves a Prime Minister.

In an interview to CNNIBN,Lady Pamela says
"My father trusted her decisions implicitly... and of course, her special relationship with Pandit Nehru was very useful for him ever the pragmatist — because there were moments towards the end of our time in India when the Kashmir problem was extremely difficult.Pandit Nehru was a Kashmiri himself, so he was emotional about the problem. If things were particularly tricky my father would say to my mother, 'Do try to get Jawaharlal to see that this is terribly important..."

In other words, the 'weakness' of Nehru was exploited by Mountbaten to have his way in political issues, especially the Kashmir issue. The move to refer the Kashmir issue to the UN is seen by many as a tactical blunder.A full 60 years later, we know get an idea of what transpired behind the scenes.

It is shocking to note that a Prime Minister can be influenced thus. And even more shocking is the deafening silence of the media and the Congress camp.

You expect a PM to be a model citizen- not only in Public life, but alsoin his/her private life. It is a huge embarrasment that a PM compromised on strategic national issues at the behest of his 'lover'.

Nehru might be a statesman. But this reveleation makes me wonder if there were more skeletons in the cupboard.

Nehru was not oppressive (never had the ability to be that way); Indira was the start of such culture. And there is a fundamental flaw in this affair... how did Nehru get attracted to Mountbatten's 'wife'?? (abhiram knows better what my question is :P )

If I am to read between the lines of sriram's statement then I would think he is saying that Nehru would never be attracted to any woman :D
(Oh my God! What have I done!!! This is blasphemy. I have insulted a National Leader posthumously)

for the first 10 yrs, when Nehru was in power, there were other guys within Congress who were playing the music... Nehru was a submissive person by nature (ofcourse stupid.. he was no better than our own Sottai in terms of qualification, he was good at english :P).. and MK wanted him to be a puppet, and rule the country for a long time... but NVG aappu vechufied.. after that, if u look at all the 'work' done.... wer by Sastri and Patel, and even Rajaji (Nehru will wet his pants in front of him) was alive for sometime and by late 50's Indira started intefering, and thats wen it all started...

I would say 50-58 was the golden era of congress(not India)... education, five-yr plans, and a genius of a President (SRK).

@all: seriously did not want to comment on this issue...but now that so many of you have bothered to comment upon this so shall i....

@sriram: still trying to figure out by what you meant.

@ all:as far as edwina goes....i am sure all of you know of the pictures of nehru and... on his first trip to eng as pm.big deal...old news as prashant puts it.as far as the crap of influence over him goes....i would like to present a different take... nehru for all we know also aspired to be a world leader; so naturally his idea of solving a local prob on the global platform is very believable....and for his greatness of the iits and the iims r concerned ANY IDIOT(irrespective of political affiliations)WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME. and mountbatten knowing of the affair...well it is pretty common knowledge that most english "ladys" had a lot of affairs and their husbands used it to their advantage...and for edwina.. nehru was one of them...

now for some more scandal on nehru...if you are to believe m.o. matthai; nehru's secretary; nehru had an illegitimate child, with a tantric sadhvi shraddha mata....so here u go murali :D :D...adding more spice to your article...

and btw i think murali you r jobless writing this unless you had no prior knowledge of this crap...

and for all of you wondering about this mata...google her name...you will get loads of links to books by K.S. matthai and others...

I thought it was a strong suspicion and that even if the people concerned were asked, they would flatly deny it.. But, was quite surprised when her daughter went on record.. and adding insult to the injury was her bragging abt her father using this affair to his advantage... i did not know that it was a serious affair.. an analogy would be the JJ-MGR relationship..
