just finished with the MBA essay prep yesterday and thought I should get back to posting...and what else could I start off with but the MS university artist freedom issue( sandy... will get back with my thoughts on the women’s rights in a couple of days...have a couple of other issues I want to write on)..Neway let me get to this...so on an eventful day we have an internal art exhibition happening in MS univ but of course other than professors we have art collectors and gallery owners and "eminent ppl" attending...and we have the HINDUTVA BRIGADE...lol...had to use the word considering its popularity with the media and especially how one of the headlines today anchors pronounces it. And as usual vandalism etc and the poor kid is put behind bars. So now arises an important question of how the right wing Hindu is preventing the Indian civilization from progressing in a liberal direction. Let me get to my view...ideally the artist should not even bother anybody. Nobody should be giving damn about what he wishes to potray.but unfortunately we do not live in such a world and it is essential to engage in competitive vandalism to protect ones interests. And why the competitive vandalism? The media in this country (forget the right wing sympathetic papers or the couple of neutral papers we have in this country...they do not count) has taken to Jawahar's policy of secularism where the minority...not necessarily religious...has to be treated extra special while the majority can be kicked a couple of times in its balls. I find it amusing that the Danish cartoons which incidentally portray reality if u ask me (will write about a book related to this...that was one of the other things I wanted to write about) were crude offensive derogatory a threat to civilization and all the crap I can think of. All the media was speaking in the sympathetic voice, condemning it, I could not see a shabnam hasmi or a teesta or artists protesting in favor of artistic freedom. Now let me get to MF who at this age has t live outside his mother land because of the atrocities of......I do not wish to list his paintings but I never have come across one painting where his artistic freedom comes to fore when the subject relates to Moslems. It is these double standards that get me a bit irritated...now let me accept that Modi is behind the hate in Gujarat...by that logic Manmohan must be behind the hate in India as it is the central gov home ministry that has filed cases against MF. Let me finally finish off with this thought. WE ALL MUST ENCOURAGE TOTAL ARTISTIC FREEDOM AS THE ENLIGHTENED OF THIS SOCIETY SAY...THEN WHY NOT PROMOTE PEDOPHILIA AND ACCEPT IT AS FREEDOM OF AN INDIVIDUAL TO EXPLORE INTERESTING SUBJECTS???
p.s.- not that I would love to see pedophiles roam around just an area I wanted to bring up as we often shun it away from public space...considering the fact that Indian children are one of the most vulnerable children in the world and more than 55% have experienced some form of exploitation within the family.

Another instance of the typica Indian double standards... u cannot help comparing this ruckus with the Danish cartoons.. if that was wrong, this too is. And interestingly, I read that when MF paints his mother or a person from his religion, they r fully clothed...In one of his painitings, he painted Hitler in the nude while others in the painting were clothed. The reason he gave ..(no prizes for guessing) He hates Hitler and waanted to insult him by painting him in the nude. How can the same camaflauge as artistic freedom when Hindu Gods are involved? His right to artistic expression does not give hima free ticket to paint whatever he wants and get away with it. Its a shame that the media chooses not to realize this.
We can rename the blog to 'media bashers'. That would be more appropriate!
And Abhiram! For all practical purposes I condider you as a part of the 'Hindutva Brigade'. RSS and all its divisions are the same as far as I am concerned :P When you support a party, you support its ideals.
I agree with the part of 'Selective Secularism' our country is following. I am not sure who is the root cause nor do I know if one person can be singled out like you have done with jawahar. Governemnt is over protective of minority. Agreed!
I was discussing about the Danish cartoon incident with a friend of mine here. Actually I held the opinion that what the cartoonist did was wrong. It does affect the sentiments of the people. But at the same time we are not to embarge on the Rights to free speech. Its a BIG thing in the US and taken very seriously. So I dont see how else the situation could have been different. I am sure the cartoonist would have expected a backlash when he published it. But where do we draw the line?
@ sandy: i never said i did not like the word"hindutva brigade"..just was making fun of the way the anchor pronounced it..jawahar...i mentioned bacause he is the architect of this whole protectionist movement of minorities...all of you must be knowing that he got only one vote (maulana azad)out of the Thirteen(?) representative votes in the congress to choose the PM...Patel was the popular choice...gandhi put his wt behind nehru..why he did not want patel to be the pm because he was a "hardliner" and that would antagonise you know who after the partition...infact there was a discussion in the parliament on having a seperate electorate for Muslims in India..and patel replied somewhat like this...you guys got what u want(read muslims who stayed back in india) ..a seperate country...it is you and not them who divided the country..how many more times do you want to do the same..arent you satisfied.. back then surprisingly there was no public backlash as the appeasement process had not begun and institutions were just about coming in place...if patel had made this statement today...it would have led to riots and somebody placing a bounty on his head...hope u got why i hold nehru responsible...btw got this from an article which came up in the paper during the UP elections...
as far as danish cartoons go or anything for that matter...right to freedom must be supreme in an idela society that we all should strive for... backlash i dont mind..all i am saying is dont demonise the hindu right while being sympethatic to the muslim right...as was the case...the more discrimination happens the more it is going to increase...sorry but that is the truth..you cannot push somebody to the wall and not expect to retaliate..be it anybody
and an interesting point to be noted is ....the word SECULAR was never a part of the draft constitution...it was added by an ammendment by Indira in the 70s...so technically we were never secular till that point of time...
yeah it is becoming media bashing but then..had to..will post something different sometime..
